Your Plasma Pen Treatment: What Should You Expect?

IStock 1134019997 1We are so excited to offer the Subnovii Plasma Pen treatment! In clinical trials and practical use, this nonsurgical, noninvasive treatment has demonstrated powerful anti-aging effects. Plasma is something that has recently been strongly associated with antiaging through topical application. That type of plasma is a blood-derivative that works by introducing growth factors to appropriately-prepared skin. The Plasma Pen is a different kind of plasma; the state of matter that has recently been harnessed for substantial tissue regeneration.

In our NYC office, Subnovii Plasma Pen treatment is commonly performed in the following areas:

  • Forehead
  • Upper and lower eyelids
  • Around the eyes (crow’s feet)
  • Peri-oral (around the mouth)
  • Jawline
  • Neck
  • Decollete

We see with Subnovii candidates the same thing we see with most patients, a desire to know what to expect. Here, we walk through the changes that occur in the days following this beneficial treatment.

Treatment Day

Subnovii treatment is performed using a small amount of local anesthetic. This is applied topically as a numbing cream. After the procedure is complete, the numb sensation may linger for a few hours. The skin may look swollen and may feel sunburned. To manage swelling, it is helpful to sleep slightly elevated. An over-the-counter pain reliever may be taken if the sunburn sensation becomes uncomfortable.

Day 1

Depending on the area treated, swelling may be more pronounced the day following Subnovii treatment. This is especially common around the eyes. Many people have reported that their swelling is worse in the mornings and tends to diminish throughout the day. The first morning after Plasma Pen treatment, swelling can be significant enough to keep you from opening your eyes fully. This is not a cause for alarm. The swelling may also spread to areas around that which has been treated. This side effect typically peaks within 48 hours and then subsides relatively quickly. In addition to swelling, you may notice itching or a feeling of tightness in the treatment area.

Day 2

On this day, you may wake up with slightly less swelling than the previous day. If you do not, know that this will probably be the last day that this side effect is so significant. You’re nearing that 48-hour timeframe! The second day after Plasma Pen treatment is also when we normally see tiny scabs develop. It is important not to disrupt these small dots, not even to scratch them if they are itchy. Picking or scratching the scabs could lead to scarring.

Day 4

Day 3 after Plasma Pen treatment is usually just a continuation of the decrease in swelling. On day 4, some of the scabs that have formed may begin to fall off. This can continue for 5 to 7 days. As the scabs fall away, the underlying skin may look pink. This healthy new skin is fragile and may be more sensitive for a short time. Do not resume your normal skincare or makeup use until your doctor says it is ok. This can usually occur by the end of one week.
